Twitter is an online social networking website. With that said, you can do much more than update your friends and family on the happenings in your life. In fact, Twitter is a great online marketing tool. Whether you are selling a product or service, you can use it to increase your sales.

Many wonder how it is possible to make money with Twitter. The service is free to use, but you don’t get paid for using it. As previously stated, you can make money if you sell a product or a service. This is because you develop a following on Twitter. These individuals are called followers, but they are also your friends or your contacts. Messages are sent throughout the system.

When using Twitter to market or sell a product or service, proceed with caution. You do not want to outright sell, as you may be labeled as a spammer. Instead, do so subtly. For example, do you run a website that sells eBooks? If so, your message could say “It took weeks, but my website is finally complete. I sell eBooks. Checkout the website and tell me if you like the format.” This gets people to your website, but without you technically soliciting a sale.

You can also use @replies to market a website selling eBooks, or any other product or service. Say you receive a message that says “I wish there was an easier way to learn about making money online. There are so many websites to visit.” You can respond with “Hey, I have a website that has an eBook for sale on working from home. It has all the information you need in one place.” Since you are responding to a message, your aren’t outright spamming Twitter members.

As you can see, there are multiple ways for you to use Twitter as an internet marketing tool and to improve your profits. The only problem is you must first develop a list of followers. Yes, your close friends and family are a good start, but they may already know all about your business and what you sell. That is why you need to expand your horizons, but how do you do so?

First, it is important to determine your targeted market. If you sell eBooks on a wide range of subjects, you will have a wide market. If you sell used kids clothes on eBay, your target market will include parents, and so forth. Once you know who your targeted market it, it is easier to find these individuals on Twitter.

As for how you can do so, the easiest approach is to join online communities. In keeping with selling kids clothes online. Join message boards for parents. Start conversations with other members. After a few days, make a post stating that you are a member of Twitter and are looking for other contacts. Say you want people to follow you on Twitter, but that you will follow them too. Not only do you get followers, but you get those in your targeted market.

Next, you can turn to the Twitter website itself. From the main page, you can click the “Find People,” link. Search for members with profiles online. You can search by location or name. Quickly scan a profile to see if a bio is present. If so, read it. What is the person interested in? Are they are parent, pet owner, or do you see other signs that classify them as a member of your target market? If so, make contact. This approach is time consuming, but it does work.

Finally, it is important to know how updates are sent. Although private updates are allowed, many Twitter members send updates to everyone on their contact list. If a reply is sent and not privately, you can see it. This allows you to see the name of other Twitter members. Become a follower. If the person you are now adding is a friend or family member of someone in your targeted market, they may share similar interests.

One of the most important aspects of search engine optimization is promoting your website through online communities. According to a professional seo company, community building does not reward your efforts immediately but it does pay-off in the long run. How many websites have you learned from Twitter or Facebook? I’m pretty sure there are more than a few. If you are a professional seo company interested in promoting your websites by investing in community building, you need to build up your profiles on different social media sites and participate.

The same strategies in optimizing a website apply to promoting it through social media networks. Keywords are still the secret to making it work. A professional seo company says you need to create quality content that is relevant, useful, and optimized with keywords.

If you are interested in promoting your website through social media networking, below are some of the most popular social media sites you could start with. These sites are often used not just by seo companies in promoting their sites but by ordinary internet users as well.

1.Digg – A website that lets users discover and share content by submitting links and stories, and then voting and commenting on these submitted links and stories. Good quality content is often described by SEO enthusiasts as ‘diggable’.

2.Technorati – An internet search engine for blogs.

3.del.icio.us – A social bookmarking web service for storing, sharing, and discovering web bookmarks.

4.Yahoo! Answer – A community-driven knowledge market website by Yahoo! that allows users to submit questions to be answered and answer questions asked by other users.

5.Flickr – An image and video hosting website, web services suite, and online community platform.

6.Reddit – A social news website on which users can post links to content on the web.

7.Wikipedia – A free, multilingual encyclopedia project supported by Wikimedia Foundation.

8.YouTube – A video sharing website where users can upload, view, and share video clips.

9.StumbleUpon – An internet community that allows its users to discover and rate web pages, photos and videos.

10.Newsvine – A community-powered news website which draws content from its users and syndicated content from mainstream sources.

Here are 6 steps to help you design your social media marketing roadmap.

Step 1: Understand What Social Media Is

The best way to look at social media is to view it as one of many Internet marketing channels, one that has the amazing power to go viral. In the very least, it has the awesome ability to engage your audience in meaningful conversations about your product, issue areas, company, and brand.

The social media marketing umbrella includes sites that are both Web 2.0 and Web 1.0 – basically you want to be anywhere that enables discussions, sharing, and user-generated content (UGC), such as:

Blogs and Forums / Discussion Boards

Consumer Review Sites

Social Networks / Online Communities

Social Bookmarking Sites

Social News Sites

Social Music Sites

Video and Photo Sharing Sites

Wikis

Step 2: Understand What Social Media Can & Can’t Do

Social media can engage your audience, encourage online conversations that are user-generated, increase your web presence, expand brand awareness, generate publicity (both good & bad) and provide SEO benefits. It doesn’t convert.

For most marketers, social media has no ROI but is great for:

Brand building

Relationship management

Product development

Reputation management

Customer interaction

Customer feedback

Customer support

Community building

Defensive SEO – Yes! Bury your bad press with positive UGC

In some cases, social media can convert – usually if you own the community, and have the power to strategically capture leads. But that’s like being the D&D Dungeon Master.

Step 3: Determine Where Conversations are Happening

You will need to respond to conversations that are already happening. To determine where conversations are happening about your brand, you will need to have some kind of buzz monitoring or online reputation management system in place.

Prioritize these discussions, then hop in.

Step 4: Divide…

Next, you want to expand into unchartered territory.

Before venturing out into the vast unknown, create your social media road map – a map of the social web as it pertains to your business. Gather all the sites that would be most interested in what you have to say and segment them by type (blogs, social networks, social news sites, forums, etc) and by target audience / topical interest.

Once you’ve done that, it will be more clear to you what your campaign specific marketing strategies and tactics ought to be.

Step 5: …and Conquer

Now comes the tactical deployment. Here are some examples of different kinds of social media engagements.

Blogger outreach & engagement - this is a top down, bottom up approach. To demonstrate a significant impact, this is best handled by a team. You will need to identify the A-List blogs, cultivate a positive relationship with as many as possible, persuade them to blog about your issue, or guest blog for them. You will need a team of conversation agents to fan out into the blogosphere and engage in MEANINGFUL conversations wherever conversations about your topic is happening.

If you have a call to action, relevant product, or web resource you are trying to drive traffic to, drop html links with target anchor text for an additional SEO lift (a % of the sites you will be hitting will be do-follow)

Disclose your identity, be courteous, informed about the subject, or you will be flamed, and that will live forever on the web.

Social networking - only hit the communities relevant to your issue, product, company, topic or you will get poor quality traffic, if any.

Are you infiltrating tight-knit interest-specific online communities? If so, you will need to ingratiate yourself into the pack.

Are you starting your own community on a hosted platform, like a Ning? You can drive conversation and awareness, your revenue options are limited (ad revenue sharing).

Do you own the community? Great – you can drive targeted conversations and include strategically placed calls-to-action, promos, ads, anywhere. If you’ve designed your site with SEO in mind, your users will create the content, and you will had an advantage in the SERPS, especially for long-tail keywords.

Social news marketing – thru social sites like Digg, StumbleUpon, Newsvine. These sites also have a unique culture and will work for you if your news item relates topics favored by the community. Digg, for example, veers towards the geeky. Write for maximum click thrus – think “linkbait”. Popular stories here can get picked up by bloggers, which will also give you an SEO boost. Traffic can be huge and fickle like a tsunami. Don’t expect it to convert. Avoid marketing here – you will be buried.

Step 6: Trust in the Force

Finally, trust is a huge factor in social engagement. Understand that social media marketing is most effective when users in the community know you. The only way for the community to know you is if you spend a lot of time online and invest managing your social web presence across communities.

Social media builds awareness and drives conversation. It’s a powerful way enable communication between the company & customer. Always remember, selling is a secondary or tertiary benefit of social media.

1. Targeting the Right Sites

There are hundreds or maybe even thousands of social media sites that you could be using. Obviously no one has the time to use them all effectively, and some of them aren’t worth your time anyway.

One of the first things you will need to do is find a few sites that will work well for you. Of course the larger sites like Digg and StumbleUpon are popular choices because of the large traffic volumes that they send. But if you are looking for sites that can send high quality traffic, first look for niche-specific social media sites.

Also targeting a general news website like Digg or Reddit can be helpful because once you have developed a strong profile you can promote all types of content, not just stuff that fits into one specific niche.

2. Consistent Use

If you hope to ever become a true authority on social media, you’ll have to implement consistent use. As you use the sites that you have targeted every day you’ll become familiar with what works and what doesn’t, and you’ll get to know some of the other consistent users.

3. Development of Content that Appeals to the Audience

Driving traffic to your website through social media will require content development that meets the expectations of social media users. Creating blog content that targets social media users doesn’t mean that you have to alienate your subscribers, contrary to the opinion of some people. What it does mean is that you will have to dedicate the time and effort to find a topic that is of particular interest to your readers and present it in a way that also appeals to social media users. For example, social media users like lists, breaking news, photos, controversy, and informative topics.

4. Networking and Helping Others

Content creation and networking are the two most important aspects of social media marketing. Great content without a network will have a harder time becoming popular and a strong network is an asset, but its value will not be realized without great content.

Networking on social media sites involves voting for the submissions of others, leaving comments, adding friends, and generally getting to know other users. With a strong network your submissions and votes will get more attention and you’ll have some friends to call on when you need help getting those extra votes needed to get over the hump.

5. Conversion

In most cases just getting traffic to a website will not be your ultimate goal. Social media traffic is pretty much useless if you are not able to convert some of it into what you want. Maybe you want to convert the traffic into links, or maybe subscribers. The conversion rate of social media traffic will usually be lower than the rates of other types of traffic, but the huge volumes sent by social media can offset a lower conversion rate and make it very valuable traffic.

While these steps will all help you to reach your goals of promoting your site with social media, they all require one very important step – taking action. So go get started today and build some momentum with social media.

There are hundreds, if not thousands of social media sites. Because there are so many it can be difficult to figure out which ones to target. In an ideal world you would target them all but with limited time it’s important to prioritize. If you are wondering which social sites to target, wonder no more because these 5 steps should answer your question:

Step 1: List out the keywords associated with your website. For example, “Search Engine Land” is probably related to: search engines, Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, social media, search engine marketing etc.

Step 2: Once you have a list of all the major keywords that are related to your website, go through a list of social media sites, select a number that look promising, visit each and search for all of your keywords.

Step 3: With certain social sites you will get tons of results and with others you will get no results. The sites that have few to no results can be crossed off your list and the sites that have tons of results are probably the sites you want to target.

You are probably looking at the steps above, realizing that there are only three steps I’ve listed so far. The reason is that the first three steps are technically all you need to figure out what social sites are relevant to your website. The final two steps aren’t necessarily needed, but if you want to improve your odds on doing well in the social web I highly recommend them.

Step 4: Before spending time targeting a site, do a check for competition. Chances are your competition is leveraging the social web. Take the time to search for your competitors’ content on the social sites you’ve selected. Instead of looking to see who has stories submitted on these sites, you need to look at who leveraged what social site successfully. By “successfully” I mean that your competition had a story that received enough votes to go popular or to the homepage of the social media site.

Step 5: The final step helps you decide whether to continue submitting to a particular social media site. Visit all those that allow comments, and see if any users offered an opinion about your website. You shouldn’t always take these comments seriously because many will be a joke, but they should give you an idea of what the users of these social websites think about your website.

Once you have done these final two steps you should be able to come up with a smaller list of social sites that you can focus on. If the list is large, be careful not to overdo it by placing twenty social media buttons on your website. If you control where your visitors go you will be more successful.
