This plugin assists in the creation of staffless lead sheets, also called chords sheets. It defines a [chordsandlyrics] shortcode which can be used in your post or page text. It does not require any editing of your template files.

Text appearing between the [chordsandlyrics] and [/chordsandlyrics] tags will be formatted for chord symbols written in square brackets (eg. [Cmaj]) embedded inline within lyrics. It will then display the chord symbol at the same horizontal position above the lyrics. For example:

[C]Oh [F]say can you see…

will be reformatting using HTML table to display as

C F Oh say can you see…

with the C correctly positioned over “Oh” and the F positioned over “say”. The commonly used alternative is to use fixed fonts which isn’t very attractive. This syntax is similar to the that used by ChordPro/Chordii.

Features:

Format lead sheets, keeping chord symbols above the correct lyric.

Appearance options page allows each end user to select Lyrics only or Chords And Lyrics display via their profile (user’s option page).

The following are the plugins I found that can make WordPress more secure.

1. Limit Login Attempts :
This plugin blocks a user for 20 minutes after he enters wrong password 4 times (default values, can be changed). It is good way to avoid Brute Force attack .

2. Sabre
If you own a WordPress powered blog where users can register freely and see a lot of fake registrations, this plugin can stop fake user registration by bots. It can add image verification or math test to registration process among other measures to make sure fake users are not created.

3. Semisecure Login :
This plugin increases the security of login process by using a public key to encrypt the password on client side. The server side then decrypts the password using the private key. Requires Javascript and PHP.

4. Bad Behavior :
It checks the visitor’s IP against Project Honey Pot Database to see if it’s a spammer’s. If malicious, it can block that IP from accessing your blog.

5. Secure WordPress :

This plugin keeps your WordPress installation secure with the help of little functions. It hides information regarding your WordPress version from non-administrators and plugin directory from visitors by dropping a blank index.php file.

I am glad to finally release the Search Ads WordPress plugin, which allows you to display content blended ads only to search engine traffic, in a quick and simple way. There are a couple of advantages connected with this strategy. First of all you will be able to add another revenue stream to your site, as organic traffic tends to yield a very high CTR. Secondly, you won’t annoy your regular visitors, because they won’t see the ads unless they come to your site via a search engine.

Here is how it works. Once you upload and activate the plugin, you will be able to find its configuration page under the “Settings” menu of WordPress. It looks like this:

The first thing that you need to configure is where the ad should appear. You can place it on top of your posts, at the bottom, or both. By default the ad will be left aligned, with no content around it. You can change the style however, adding margins, changing the alignment, wrapping the content around it and so on.

The second step is to paste your ad code. It can be the Javascript code of your AdSense unit or even an HTML code if you want to run a static banner ad. For optimal performance I recommend that you use the 336×280 AdSense unit.

Finally, you can choose what search engines should trigger the ads. You can also include other sites in that list, including social networking sites like Twitter or Facebook.

That is it. Save the configuration and your ads should be live.

The plugin was developed with Andreas Nurbo. If you need custom plugins developed or help to fix anything inside WordPress, he is available for hiring.

We tested it on WordPress 2.5 up to 2.8.3. This is the first release, though, so if you find any bugs just let me know with a comment below and we’ll try to fix it as soon as possible.

Bloggers love to have comments on their blogs. It builds social proof, enriches the content, fosters community and so on. Here are six plugins that you can use to boost the number of comments on your blog and make the commenting process more efficient.

1. Better Comments Manager

Replying to comments from your readers will make them come back in the future, because they will know that your care for them.

The “Better Comments Manager” plugin allows you to reply to the comments right from the Admin panel. In the absence of this plug-in, you have to visit the post individually and reply to the comment which is time consuming and tedious if you have tons of comments to reply.

2. Subscribe to Comments

By installing this plug-in in your WordPress blog your readers can get email notifications about the further comments on the post. When a reader comments in a post and checks the box to get E-mail notifications, it helps him to stay in touch with the comments and encourages him to come back to your blog and stay engaged in the discussion.

This helps to add more value to your post as more and more commenter’s exchange their ideas and views on the post.

3. WordPress Thread Comment

This plugin for WordPress allows the readers to reply to a specific comment, making it easier to follow the discussion. The plugin should also be compatible with most WordPress themes around, and installation is not that difficult.

4. IntenseDebate

This is one another cool WordPress plugin to consider if you are looking to get more comments and visits to your WordPress blog. This plug-in encourages your readers to actively participate in the discussion and it allows them to rate a comment posted with simple thumbs up or down buttons.

They can also leave active replies to the comments or start a new comment. Commenters can also subscribe to the replies and new comments such that they get email notification when a reply to their comment is received or any new comment is added to the post.

5. Absolute Comments

This plugin for WordPress also allows you to instantly reply to comments right from the admin panel.

The interesting feature of this plug-in is that it supports threaded comments, and if you have set to receive email notification, when a new comment is posted you can see a direct reply link to the comment in the email.

6. Contact Commenters

This is a great tool to interact with the commenters of your blog posts. By using this plugin you can send email to selected commenters, perhaps thanking their for their comments or asking their opinions on a related issue.

If you want to show off your web design credentials to the world, then WordPress is the perfect blogging platform to use: it’s simple, accessible and highly customisable. Nevertheless, you’re not going to be able to create a professional standard WordPress blog with great work and creativity alone, you’re also going to need some rather nifty plugins.

There are literally thousands of plugins currently available and, believe me, sifting through them can be an arduous task: some are absolutely brilliant, but many more are mediocre or totally pointless. The 15 superior plugins outlined below are all perfectly suited to the aspiring web designer looking to show off their wares. They’ll boost levels of traffic to your site, integrate your blog with Facebook, increase your productivity and make for a more interactive and interesting visitor experience.

WP Greet Box

You can greatly increase the readership of your blog with this ingenious plugin that provides visitors to your site with a tailored welcome message. New visitors can be invited to subscribe to your RSS feed, Digg your posts, or follow you on Twitter, depending on how they have clicked onto your site. Smashing Magazine, a site devoted to web design, has used this plugin, so you know it’s good!

NextGEN Gallery

NextGen is fast becoming the industry standard for displaying images on a WordPress blog. It’s simple and in many ways unexciting, but looks extremely professional. It comes with a Flash slideshow and a straightforward back-end, making image management that little bit easier.

FlippingBook

If NextGen occupies the more basic end of the image plugin spectrum, then FlippingBook occupies the more creative. You can use this plugin to organise images into individual interactive albums, which can be flicked through just like a book.

WP Super Cache

WP Super Cache protects your site against the huge spikes in traffic that can result from a front-page appearance on Digg for example, or promotion on a social networking site. It does so by generating static HTML files from your blog, which are then served to the vast majority of your visitors.

Facebook Connect

This much-needed plugin helps to promote your design work by integrating WordPress and your Facebook page. You can login to your WordPress blog using your Facebook account, invite Facebook friends to visit your blog and send blog comments to your Facebook profile feed.

Global Translator

You’ll be able to promote your web design to new and diverse global markets with this fantastic plugin. It instantly translates your blog into 41 languages, including Spanish, German, Italian, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, and even Maltese.

Post Ideas

Got a great idea for a post, but no time to publish it? Like an online notebook, this plugin lets you record ideas for future posts in WordPress. This way, ideas will never be lost or forgotten and you can save paper in the process!

Sliding Panel

If you’ve got a large client list and endless examples of previous work, then you might struggle to upload everything you want to your blog without it getting cluttered and confusing. This space-saving plugin adds a panel to the top of your blog which opens and closes to hide (or expose) content.

WP Wall

Following in Facebook’s footsteps, this plugin adds a “wall” to the sidebar of your blog onto which visitors can quickly add comments about posts or your blog in general. The comments are internally handled by WordPress so that you can moderate their content.

Insights

Insights is a great tool for inserting images, videos, maps and so much more into your posts. Simply enter a keyword and choose from the Flickr images, Youtube videos, Wikipedia links and Google Maps that appear below.

Page Link Manager

This easy-to-use plugin adds an administration panel to your dashboard, allowing you to choose which links are included in your blog’s navigation. Link to the posts that you are most proud of and best exemplify your design style.

About Me Widget

An “About Me” sidebar is a great means of communicating brand identity to potential clients and other visitors. Of course, it’s already possible to create such a sidebar in WordPress, but this widget really simplifies the process, solving all alignment and formatting issues.

As far as I am concerned, Wordpress is the best blogging platform as well as the most extend-able and customizable CMS out there. If I am preparing for a new project, the first question I ask is, “Can this site be effectively powered by Wordpress?” My guess is that 9 times out of 10 that it will be. There are very few clients out there who have a website in mind that is so ridiculously large and complicated that Wordpress can’t handle (such as a department store, and they will have their own teams anyway). Besides the fact that Wordpress is exceptionally powerful, it is exceptionally popular.

This is where it gets a little sticky. Since Wordpress is so popular and has such a large user-base, it is therefore all the most likely to be exploited by hackers and malicious users. In all honesty, there is no perfectly secure anything on the web or on computers, but it gets close. This being said, Wordpress is somewhat susceptible to attack. There are many things you can do to enhance the security of your Wordpress installation and plugins are one of the more helpful ones. (I will come back and post more about other things you can do to protect Wordpress without plugins.

1. WP Security Scan

I love this one. There are several features that will give you a good idea of how secure your Wordpress installation really is. It does not have means of changing many issues from the Dashboard, however, but if you are savvy enough to have your own Wordpress installation, you should be savy enough to fix the issues it will alert you to.

2. Login Lockdown

This plugin will give you some extra security on login. Should there be someone trying to crack into your Administrator’s account using brute force attacks or simply guessing at your password, Wordpress alone will not prevent them from doing this indefinitely until your password is cracked. This plugin will limit the number of login attempts that can be made and will prevent login attempts after a certain number of login failures. It will also log any failures and lockouts that occur in your database.

3. AntiVirus

This is a really neat plugin. Here is the WP Antivirus’ description of their own plugin: “Viruses, worms and malware exist for WordPress and could easily attack your WordPress installation. AntiVirus for WordPress monitors malicious injections and warns you of any possible attacks”.

4. Wordpress Firewall

It intelligently whitelists and blacklists pathological-looking phrases based on which field they appear within in a page request (unknown/numeric parameters vs. known post bodies, comment bodies, etc.). Its purpose is not to replace prompt and responsible upgrading, but rather to mitigate 0-day attacks and let bloggers sleep better at night.

5. Wordpress Exploit Scanner

This one is absolutely fantastic! If there ever is a hacker that gets into your site to add or take malicious content, it is almost inevitable that they will leave some code behind. This plugin can scan just about, if not everything in your Wordpress installation for hacker trails. It even comes with an MD5 hash of itself to compare with what it should be in the Wordpress.org plugin repo.

With more than 7000+ plugins, WordPress is the most extendable Content Management System available; in fact, “WordPress is infinitely extensible” as Matt Mullenweg says. In this post, we’ll examine twenty-one really useful plugins to take your blog to the next level.

1. Drag To Share

Drag to share is the newest trend in social sharing. Just drag an image and drop it into any social website to share the whole page in real time. Most notably, this effect is being used by Mashable. The plugin was developed with the source files created by Dan Wellman.

2. Paginator

“Paginator is a pagination technique based on the idea of scrolling.”

3. TypeKit Plugin for WordPress

“This is a convenient way for WordPress users to use the Typekit font service in WordPress web sites. This will enable users to quickly change the fonts on their sites. Further this plugin provides the ability to designate where TypeKit will be used in their site.”

4. Coming Soon Page

The “Custom Coming Soon Pages” WordPress plugin allows you to display a “Coming Soon” or “Under Construction” page to normal visitors or regular members of your WordPress site, while the site administrators continue to see the fully functional website.

This will enable you to perform upgrades, fix nasty bugs or preview jazzy enhancements to your design live on your WordPress based website or blog without letting your users and normal visitors see crappy error messages or changes to the design until you really want them to.”

5. Pretty Comments

Add some formatting capabilities to the comments textareas.

6. Custom Class Selector

The Custom Class Selector plugin allows users to style their post content using custom classes made available by the active theme. Theme developers can make custom style classes available within the visual editor by adding a simple function to the functions.php file included with their theme.

7. PHP-Widgetify

Like a normal text widget, this allows you to easily post text and HTML, but now you can execute PHP too! This makes merging with other themes easier.

8. Freebie Images: Free Stock Images Plugin

With the Custom Login Page, you can change the background image of your login page, the background image/colo of your login form div, the main logo image of your login page, and add custom CSS – all through a simple interface.
